Gordon Smash Southern Districts

The Gordon Highlanders have recorded a crushing 86 – 20 win over Southern Districts in their first home game of 2007. The dial was set to thrill as the mighty Highlanders rolled into action crossing the line in the early exchanges through winger Atu Vakatawakoro. The onslaught continued with the Highlanders piling on 38 points before half time.

Gordon opened the second half with two unanswered tries in 3 minutes through a strong offload from Jone Kagi to put Mark Preston in under the posts, then some expansive play from the Highlanders resulted in winger Andrew Moodie scoring in the corner.

Gordon then went into a lull and allowed Southern Districts to steal two tries before Michael Schmidt scored his first try in 4 years with a classic Prop’s try, burrowing over from a metre out. The Highlanders then put the nails in the coffin and finished the day with Fullback Mark Preston showing some fancy footwork to cross the line on the bell.

Gordon suffered a minor setback with a recurring shoulder injury to Waratah Academy member Kingsley Seale. In a sign of Gordon’s strength and depth he was ably replaced with giant 18 year old lock Jarred Barry.

“This is no time to get excited” said Head Coach Lachlan Fear.

“We have Easts next Sunday who have won 3 from 3 with bonus points. That will give us a true indication of where we are in the table.” Coach Fear said.

Gordon Centre Donny Nepia expressed dissatisfaction with the blow out win. “At half time we were disappointed with the way we were playing, even though we were scoring points. We can defiantly improve our play.”

The day was all tartan as the Club won all senior grades. A good start to the season for 1sts Colts too, winning their first competition match of 2007. “It was a good win knowing that the Souths had already played 2 games and this was our first. Our match fitness was down but overall we were happy” said Gordon Colts Coach Nick Hill.

Encouraging signs for the Highlanders as they head into this weeks Sunday game at Chatswood Oval. The highlanders are calling on all supporters to dust off their tartan and join them this Sunday at 3:00pm to cheer them home in the top of the table clash against Eastern Suburbs.
